The Taboo Menswear Trends You Can Actually Wear
The world of fashion is known for breaking rules. Sometimes, it even breaks its own. Black is now readily seen alongside blue; tweed is not just for country, but also for town; and denim-on-denim gets a unanimous thumbs up.
This ebb and flow of acceptability has seen a number of once banished pieces make like the prodigal son, welcomed back onto runways with open arms. These are the items you should regret ejecting from your wardrobe – and swiftly replace.
Tracksuit Trousers
In the last year, jogging bottoms have gone from layabout favourite to Lanvin-endorsed. And the French fashion house isn’t the only co-sign. Paul Smith, Giorgio Armani and Louis Vuitton have all embraced the athleisure look , and this unlikely transformation from cast-out to couture is thanks to a new breed of slim styles, which swap scratchy cotton for luxury fabrics. It doesn’t hurt that a certain Mr West is rarely seen out of them. When worn with quality knitwear and even suit jackets, it’s easy to see why the decade of denim domination is over.
Pinstripes
The city boy’s power pattern wasn’t always taboo. Favoured by menswear OGs Cary Grant and Clark Gable, the pinstripe’s adoption in the 1980s by a certain breed of bonus-snorting banker meant sartorial banishment when the bubble burst.
Now, pinstripes are re-emerging at the hands of designers like Richard James and Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent, thankfully without the padded shoulders or chest-covering lapels.
Update yours by minding the gap – a thicker chalkstripe is less intense than its slimmer brother – and keep your shirt and tie muted. That means definitely no contrast collars.
Corduroy Suits
Corduroy has a struck an unlikely, ahem, chord with the fashion forward. This old-school fabric has graduated from covering substitute teachers to Pitti Uomo’s best dressed, and it’s largely thanks to director Wes Anderson, whose love of corduroy materialises as much in his films as his real-life wardrobe.
The key to not looking like a visiting professor is swapping your usual hues for jewel tones, if you’re brave, or autumn leaf hues if you’re not. Equally important is the wale – the distance between the ridges. The bigger the gap, the warmer the material, and the squarer your look. Stay fine to, well, stay fine.
‘Ugly’ Trainers
Minimal trainers have had their moment and while they’re not disappearing anytime soon, maximalism is flexing its muscles. Alongside joggers, the athleisure trend has seen the rise of busy, bulbous footwear styles, with reissues of Nike’s Air Max 95 and Reebok’s Insta Pump Fury, as well as the soaring popularity of Raf Simons’ and adidas’ opinion-splitting Ozweego.
Not one for dressing down your suit, you’re best top-to-toeing the sportswear line with a tailored tracksuit, or steering Yeezy with black, stacked denim.
Florals
Florals made a comeback a couple of summers ago, but the fact they are still going strong and continue to be important in the success of several collections earns them a place on this list.
Like sandals, florals had to overcome an association with femininity before they could bloom in menswear. However, understand that they’re not always on the dress code. Advice Lewis Hamilton should have heeded before trying to wear his into the Royal Box at Wimbledon.
Create a Work-Friendly Wardrobe on a Budget?
Congratulations! The good news is it’s really easy to create a basic wardrobe with just a few key pieces. You can mix and match those essentials in a variety of combinations, so you don’t have to feel like you’re always wearing the same thing and will have outfits suitable for various occasions. Let’s get you started.
Use neutral colors as your base (black, gray, navy, or tans). This will not only ensure all your clothes will go together, it also can be a huge time saver (President Obama only wears gray or navy suits, eliminating that small decision he’d have to make every morning).

Use accessories to switch up your look. Once you’ve got the basics (see below for suggestions), accessories like ties for men or jewelry for women can add more color and variety to your wardrobe.
When you find a piece you love that fits you well, buy multiple versions of it in different colors.
If you have more room for things like sweaters and blazers, the image above showcases something similar for you. With just 9 items (including shoes), you have an entire week’s worth of outfits. Created as an example for a business trip, these are good basics (three dress shirts, a blazer, v-neck sweater, loafers, two trousers, and a pair of cuff links).
The list below makes a comprehensive checklist of classic clothes that make up a simple wardrobe. This includes:
- 2 formal suits
- 1 classic tuxedo
- 3 go-to blazers
- 4 dress shirts
- 2 slim dark jeans
- 2 slim neutral chinos
- 2 belts
- 1 watch
- 1 pair of sunglasses
- 1 turtleneck sweater
- 1 neutral cardigan
- 2 dress shoes (black and brown)
- 1 pair each of loafers, mocassins, and sneakers
- 1 neutral scarf
- 3 ties
- 4 pocket squares
- 3 checked shirts
- 2 bowties
- 6 basic T-shirts
- 3 polo shirts
- 1 pair of flip flops
Obviously, you don't need to go out and buy everything on this list. Tweak for your specific needs and work dress code, and buy the important stuff first (a tuxedo, for example, probably isn’t for you if you’re not going to wear it at least three times in the next few years, and we wouldn't exactly call pocket squares or bow ties "essentials" you need right off the bat).
MEN’S AUTUMN LOOKS: 5 MUST-HAVE JACKETS
What better way to kick off the week than with some man candy? Oh, I mean man fashion. It’s a win-win situation for both lots actually regardless of their fashion penchant. Besides, it’s a really good to share ideas and what we want our lads to dress like. Also, on Friday I ran into an old friend and after being in awe with him, we talked about what we should wear ? for a Sunday occasion.
So upon my men research over the weekend on men’s autumn looks in 2015, two things caught my attention: 1. The facial hair trend aka the beard is pretty much passe, as a lot of men out there are giving us bare faces, or at most a stubble, with a greater care for le hair on their head instead. Perhaps it’s a going back to the retro more 50s styles of Mad Men and sleek gangsters and 2, When it comes to men’s autumn looks and trends – 3 jackets remain staples for any man regardless of style, age, or profession. How you boys wear them, and style them – now that’s where the plot thickens.
THE MAN BLAZER. One of the perks of autumn is the play with layers and the centre stage a blazer takes in a man’s look. It’s the easiest and most classic style for men for years and years and will remain so. It’s also perfect for crispy mornings, but not too thick in case by noon it’s summer all over again.
THE MAN TRENCH-COAT. Classic. Hot. Uber professional even when laid back. British refined. Retro. Although… don’t let any of the below fool you. A trench coat can be worn with anything, for any occasion, any style, any look. It’s all a matter of finding the right cut, and design for your body type.
THE LEATHER JACKET. This is the most versatile and the coolest look on a man. BUT how can you wear it and not look like them rest of the billion men in leather jackets ? First of all, when wearing a leather jacket, got for quality, pick edgy classic styles, that fit into your personal look. Leather jackets are incredibly versatile so whatever you wear underneath it, it’ll look good. If the jacket is fantastic you can get away with absolutely any outfit.
THE DENIM JACKET. t is a very very retro-trendy cool gimmick, that’s perfect for a more urban twist, for tees, and cool shirts, and dark jeans and sneakers, and baseball hats, BUT it also looks amazing clashed against more professional items: a pair of suit trousers, chelsea boots, a dark shirt buttoned all the way up.
THE BASEBALL JACKET. Classy, Catchy and goes with almost every thing.
